Phnom Tamao Zoological Park, Protected Forest, and Arboretum was established in 1995 and covers 2,025 hectares of regenerating protected forest, the largest zoo in Cambodia. It plays a vital role in conserving wildlife and forests, providing a sanctuary for around 116 animal species—including mammals, birds, and reptiles—that were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade, trapped, orphaned, or unwanted wildlife. The park also features about 59 tree species, some of which are rare and endangered.
Our goal
Phnom Tamao Zoo serves as a sanctuary for the protection of wild animals, plants, and their natural habitats. Forests and wildlife are essential for maintaining ecological balance and supporting vital natural processes such as rainfall, temperature regulation, and soil fertility. The zoo’s mission is to preserve nature for future generations while highlighting the critical role forests and wildlife play in sustaining both human life and biodiversity. Moreover, a breeding program has been established to help increase the population of endangered species, with the goal of eventually releasing them back into their natural forest habitats.
