Forests play a crucial role as wildlife habitats and contribute to a healthy environment. Before 1995, the forest cover at Phnom Tamao Zoo had declined to 1,758.06 hectares, with much of it degraded. However, since the establishment of Phnom Tamao Zoological Park, the forest cover has increased to 2,162.7 hectares by 2017, featuring full tree growth. This improvement is the result of active forest restoration efforts, including planting a mix of tree species and enforcing strict protection laws. Once the rescued animals have recovered, they are released back into the natural deciduous forests of Phnom Tamao
At Phnom Tamao Zoological Park, wildlife is rehabilitated after being rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. Many species have been confiscated from illegal trading and hunting activities and are now receiving professional care and rehabilitation at the center.
