The Binturong, also known as the bearcat, is a heavy-bodied, nocturnal mammal native to the dense forests of South and Southeast Asia. Despite its nickname, it is neither a bear nor a cat, but rather a member of the civet family with shaggy black fur, long white whiskers, and a fully prehensile tail used like a fifth limb for climbing. Uniquely, it is famous for emitting a natural scent from its musk glands that smells remarkably like hot buttered popcorn. As primarily arboreal frugivores, Binturongs spend most of their lives high in the trees, feeding mainly on figs and other fruits. They are essential to rainforest health as seed dispersers, but they face ongoing population declines due to habitat loss and the illegal wildlife trade.
