Black-necked Stork

Black-necked Stork

Meet the Black-necked Stork, the striking, tuxedo-clad royal guard of the wetlands. Standing almost as tall as a person on bright red, stilt-like legs, they boast a massive, sword-like beak and an iridescent neck that shimmers in the sunlight like dark blue and green velvet. Think of them as the solitary sentinels of the marshes, patiently patrolling the shallow waters before using their heavy-duty bill like a pair of giant tongs to expertly snap up fish, frogs, and even small reptiles. Sadly, just as a king cannot rule without a kingdom, these majestic birds are losing their wetland realms to agricultural expansion and human disturbance, making our conservation efforts here in Cambodia—one of their very last strongholds in Southeast Asia—absolutely essential for their survival.
