With piercing yellow eyes and prominent ear tufts that make them look perpetually surprised, these impressive raptors are uniquely adapted for a life on the water. Think of them as night-time river fishermen equipped with their very own built-in waterproof waders; unlike most forest owls, their long legs are completely unfeathered so they don't get heavy and waterlogged when they plunge into streams! To hold onto their slippery meals, the bottom of their feet are covered in tiny, specialized spikes that act exactly like natural grappling hooks to perfectly secure wriggling fish, frogs, and crabs. Unfortunately, these magnificent river guardians are losing their waterside homes due to deforestation, overfishing, and severe water pollution, making our sanctuary a vital haven to ensure they can keep hunting safely under the moonlight.
