Think of them as the forest’s ultimate stealthy dockworkers! While most owls rely on completely silent flight to catch mice in the dark, this owl specializes in aquatic ambushes. They will sit perfectly motionless on a low branch for hours—exactly like a feathered gargoyle guarding a castle moat—waiting to spot a tiny ripple in the water. When they strike, their bare, unfeathered legs keep them from getting waterlogged, and the bottoms of their feet are covered in rough, sandpaper-like scales that act like heavy-duty gripping tongs to snatch up slippery fish, frogs, and crabs. Unfortunately, these magnificent waterside hunters are rapidly losing their wetland homes to agricultural expansion and water pollution, making our sanctuary a vital refuge where they can safely keep watch over the waters.
