Great Hornbill

Great Hornbill

Meet the Great Hornbill, the majestic king of the forest canopy and a true heavyweight champion of the skies. With their massive wingspan and spectacular yellow-and-black casque resting on their beak like a royal crown, they are an unforgettable sight. When they fly overhead, their enormous wings lack the special feathers that muffle sound, creating a loud, rhythmic "whoosh" that sounds exactly like an approaching steam train! Think of them as the ultimate "jungle farmers"; their absolute favorite food is figs, and as they fly vast distances across the canopy, they drop seeds that essentially plant new forests. Like their smaller hornbill cousins, they use a fascinating nesting strategy where the female seals herself inside a giant hollow tree for months, relying entirely on her devoted mate to act as a full-time food delivery service. Tragically, these magnificent royals of the forest are rapidly declining because they require massive, ancient trees for their nests—trees that are disappearing due to illegal logging. Our conservation efforts here are vital to keeping these colossal birds soaring through Cambodia's skies.
