Pangolin
Meet the Pangolin, the gentle, armored knight of the forest. Looking much like a walking pinecone, it is the only mammal in the world entirely covered in tough, overlapping scales made of keratin—the exact same material as your own fingernails! Rather than fighting when threatened, it simply rolls into a tight, impenetrable ball, and it navigates the forest floor using a sticky tongue that can stretch longer than its entire body to slurp up thousands of ants and termites like a living vacuum cleaner. Tragically, these shy creatures hold the heartbreaking title of being the most illegally trafficked mammals on Earth due to unfounded demand for their scales, making our sanctuary here a crucial safe haven for their survival.
