The Red Collared Dove, also known as the red turtle dove, is a small and compact pigeon species native to the plains and woodlands of South and Southeast Asia. Males are distinguished by their striking vinous-red or pinkish-maroon plumage, bluish-grey head, and a prominent black half-collar around the nape of the neck. Females, in contrast, display a much duller, sandy grey-brown coloration that provides effective camouflage from predators. Highly adaptable by nature, these doves inhabit open countryside, dry cultivated scrublands, farmlands, and urban edges, spending much of their time foraging on the ground for seeds, grains, and buds. They are swift and direct flyers that often travel in pairs or small foraging flocks, filling the air with their rhythmic, throaty cooing calls.
