Smooth-Coated Otter
The Smooth-coated Otter is the largest otter species in Southeast Asia, easily recognized by its short, velvety fur that gives it a sleek appearance. These semi-aquatic mammals are exceptionally well-adapted for swimming, featuring webbed feet and a strong, flattened tail that acts like a rudder. As highly social creatures, they live in tight-knit family groups and communicate using a wide variety of chirps, whistles, and squeaks. They are skilled carnivores that play a crucial ecological role in river and wetland ecosystems by regulating fish and crustacean populations. Sadly, Smooth-coated Otters face severe conservation challenges due to wetland destruction, water pollution, and illegal wildlife trade.
