The Spotted Dove is a small, slender pigeon native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, commonly found in open woodlands, farmlands, and urban parks. It is instantly recognized by the distinctive wide black patch heavily speckled with white spots that wraps around the back and sides of its neck. With a soft rosy-grey breast, brownish-grey wings, and a relatively long tail, this dove moves with a graceful and gentle posture. Primarily a ground-dwelling seed eater, it spends much of the day strutting along roadsides and clearings foraging for grass seeds, grains, and fallen fruit. It is well known for its mellow, repetitive cooing call, which is a familiar and soothing sound across countryside and city gardens alike.
