The sun bear is the smallest and most arboreal (tree-dwelling) of all the world's eight bear species. It is easily recognized by the distinct crescent-shaped patch of golden-orange fur on its chest, which legend says resembles the rising sun. Armed with an incredibly long tongue and sharp, curved claws, these bears are expert climbers that easily tear apart tree bark to feast on wild honey and insects. They play a vital ecological role by dispersing seeds and helping control insect populations in their forest habitats. Unfortunately, sun bears face severe threats from habitat destruction and illegal hunting, making them a vulnerable species in need of protection.
